Everyone knows that great style comes from great personality. An item of clothing on one guy may look cool on him and then look terrible on his brother. It happens and is easy to understand. You just need to understand that your average normal guy is normal and average looking and worse yet, has average taste in fashion. He can work out as much as he wants, have plastic surgery, and even win the lottery, but nothing will make him less normal and average faster than improving his wardrobe.

The problem is fashion can be quite the tricky thing for many men. No one is saying you need to be cutting edge, but at least try for up-to-date. Like for example, you really shouldn’t need help coordinating appropriate colors with your clothes. It’s even easier if you follow a couple simple rules. Here are just some of those rules that men need to pay attention to:
Match your tie with your shirt – Every guy I know has at least one colored tie that matches a solid-colored shirt. Unfortunately for them, this look is so yesterday and it’s time to shake things up a bit. Experiment with color. Don’t be shy. If colors aren’t your thing, then how about wearing ties with diagonal stripes, plaids or other subtle patterns. Be sure not to forget to match your tie with your shirt, suit, or sweater. Never ever wear a novelty tie unless it’s Halloween and part of your costume.

Pleated pants and flat-front pants – I don’t think a lot of guys realize how much better flat-front pants look compared to pleated ones. Unless they enjoy looking fatter than they do since pleats make you appear less slim. The excuse most guys give is that pleats are much more comfortable along with other nonsense along those lines. Another reason why I like flat-front pants is simply because they are a lot more fashionable and trendy at this moment.

Socks – Well the official unofficial rule for wearing socks is that the color of your socks better match pants. It doesn’t need to be the exact same color but in that same color group, at least. One of the latest trends are socks with patterns, such as stripes in various colors. Still remember that even though they are patterned, they still should match your pants and shoes in color.

Watches – Watches are the single most important accessory a man can own. If you want to be taken seriously for your fashion astuteness, buy yourself a really nice designer watch. It one of the most distinguishable accessories a man can own. I know some men who own more than one watch and have one to match every outfit they own.

Eyeglasses – Glasses can be much more than just functional. Try using them to enhance your overall look. Purchase a pair of eyeglasses compliments the shape of your face as well as shows off your personality.

In the 1960s, fashion really kicked off with the introduction to many new and diverse trends. You can easy determine trends from the early, middle and end of the decade. Traditional, conforming man’s attire was lost due to social changes. Throughout the 60s, the focal point in fashion was the uprising of bright colors and tones. The changes in the fashion of this time were more so than any other time previous. This renaissance in fashion was influenced heavily by Italian designers and by the Modernist, Hippie and Edwardian styles of dress.

The British & the Modernist Movement

At the forefront of style in the 60s were the British. The modernist movement came about at the beginning of the era, allowing young men to push boundaries and make way for the many new trends that would follow. It was all about moving away from the ‘lack of style’ in the 50s and experimenting with psychedelic prints and gregarious patterns. No man wanted to be seen in dull and pale shades. No! It was time to add color and plenty of it, the brighter and more flamboyant the better. It wasn’t uncommon to see frills and cravats on a man’s shirt. Even neckties enjoyed their rebirth, from the skinny tie at the beginning of the 60s to the very wide ties in the Hippie age, all adorned with unusual prints, stripes and patterns.

The Mods versus the Rockers

If you lived the 60s, you were probably a Mod at one stage, and if you weren’t, you were a Rocker. The two were notorious rivals. The Rockers were heavily into 50s rock-and roll, big bikes like the Harley Davidson, leather jackets and ‘Elvis’ greased back hairstyles. The Mods were classier, listening to British bands such as The Beatles. They preferred Vespers over Harleys and took their trends from respectable French and Italian clothes designers. Most commonly, tailored suits with slim shirts, pants and skinny ties slimmed down to just an inch. The Modernists also brought us the anorak, an item of clothing regarded as their trademark.

The Edwardian Movement

A bit further down the line, specifically the year of 1966, men embraced the Edwardian movement. Double-breasted suits in velvet were worn by men following icons such as Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones. These suits were accompanied with brocade waistcoats, shirts with frilled collars and longer hair as opposed to the previous shorter styles. All variations of colors, stripes and patterns were evident in this so-called ‘dandified’ look. The Nehru jacket also came about in this time and was popular with both men and women.

Hippies and an Even More Flamboyant Fashion

Towards the end of the decade, fashion became even crazier, people were not afraid to customize their clothing. Hippies were born and men became more in touch with their feminine side with long hair, polka dot neckties, paisley patterned shirts and florescent colors. Skinny became wide; for example, bell-bottomed trousers and ties returning to the 5″ width. Nearly every item of clothing was tie-dyed or produced with floral prints, pop art and paisley patterns. Neckwear was commonly sold with the shirt together and designers continued to play with bold colors.

There has been an evolution of popular sock styles over the past decades. Anyone failing to adhere to the social “sock code” was at risk for dealing with the stigma that sometimes comes with nonconformity. Knee socks coming to just below the knee put in an appearance in the sixties, followed by tube socks with no stitched in heel during the seventies, then bulky crew socks and ankle socks that accessorized stirrup pants appeared in the eighties. The latest generation has developed an attitude of tolerance to diversity that has extended to clothing and footwear. Now white socks, colorful socks, ankle socks and no show socks are all accepted as the norm, but no show socks boast a greater popularity than many other styles. If they are neon colored socks and low cut, it is just that much better.

These lower socks that come up to just below the line of the shoe are favored for many reasons. Some people believe that the line of the sock parallel to the top of the shoe adds another line across the ankle and leg that is unflattering. Others feel a visible sock can detract from the appeal of a good shoe. Some like the fact that they can avoid a tan line and the white ankles that result when higher socks are worn. Others claim that socks that are not visible eliminate wasted time trying to match up pairs for aesthetic reasons. Last, there are those who claim to like the fact that they quickly slip over the foot with no fuss.

Socks, even low cut socks, are an opportunity to make a fashion statement to the world. When they are colorful socks, or even neon color socks, they have a bright fun appeal. Buying a pack with 6 pairs or more socks allows the wearer to mix and match the colors for a subtle touch of the outrageous. When the time comes to remove shoes, someone wearing an amusing mix of socks can tell the world they look for the fun in life.

When shopping for a quality pair of white or colored socks, there are features to consider. Worthy no show socks will stay put and not slip off of the heel, so it makes sense to check for quality fabric and firm elasticity. A shopper should examine the toe of the sock for smoother seams that will not be irritating. If value is a concern, multi packs makes sense. Packs that have 6 pairs of socks usually provide a better deal.

Whether wearing white socks, or colored socks, or ankle socks, or socks that barely cover the heel, it is important to find the pair that best provides the most comfort and coordinates with the lifestyle of the wearer.
