Yves Saint Laurent, YSL a popular fashion house of luxury clothing was started by Yves Saint Laurent and his co-worker Pierre Berge. After the death of Yves Saint Laurent in 2008, Stefano Pilati joined in as a chief designer.
Yves Saint Laurent brand was established in the year 1962. In between 1960-70, the brand offered the range of collection that included safari jackets for men and women, tight pants, long boots which had a typical Beatnik look (anti-materialistic lifestyle). It focused on creating the popular classic tuxedo suit especially for women called the Le Smoking, in the year 1966. He had a huge collection of memorable designs Pop Art, Ballet Russes, Picasso, and Chinese, with this he brought back the fashion of 1920s, 30s, 40s of designing the silhouettes. In 1966, he popularized ready-to-wear collection in order to liberalize fashion and he started Rive Gauche and Rive Gauche boutique.
In 1993, Yves St. Laurent sold its fashion house to Sanofi, a pharmaceutical company for around $600,000,000. After designing three collections, by Alber Elbaz in 1998-99, Gucci took over the YSL brand, for which he suggested Tom Ford to design the ready-to-wear range while YSL was engaged to design the haute couture range.
